You'll catch 77 Lounge right off S Western Ave in South LA before you even see the neon sign, mostly because the bass is rattling the heavy metal doorframe and there's already a loud cluster of smokers blocking the pavement. The security guard checks IDs with a bored nod and doesn't care about your jacket. It's dark inside and smells like floor cleaner mixed with cheap tequila and stale air.

Heavy room. The stage sits wedged in the back corner right by the restrooms, barely wide enough for a three-piece band and their battered amps. You can't squeeze past the front row once the guitars kick in because bodies are packed shoulder-to-shoulder against the cracked vinyl booths. Sound bounces hard off the tile floors and rattles your teeth while the overhead neon flickers.

Bartenders pour heavy drinks and don't waste time making small talk when the queue gets deep at the register. Someone left a half-empty cup of ice on the sticky wooden counter near the back exit, and you'll probably step right in it if you aren't looking down at your boots while navigating the crowd.
